Introduction
The Genie S-65 is a self-propelled telescopic boom lift designed to provide access to elevated work areas while maintaining stability, reach, and productivity. As with any mobile elevating work platform, safe operation depends on proper training, familiarity with the machine controls, and strict adherence to manufacturer operating procedures. Only trained and authorized personnel should operate the S-65.
Understanding the Control Systems
The Genie S-65 has two primary control stations:
- Ground controls: Located on the chassis and used for pre-operation checks, emergency functions, and machine positioning from the ground.
- Platform controls: Located in the work platform, allowing the operator to control boom movement, platform positioning, steering, and driving functions while elevated.
Ground controls provide an important safety backup and allow personnel on the ground to assist in an emergency. Platform controls are used during normal operation.
Key Functions Available Through the Controls
The control system enables operators to manage several machine functions:
Boom Raise and Lower
Operators can elevate or lower the main boom to reach different working heights. Smooth control supports precise positioning near the work area.
Boom Extension and Retraction
The telescopic boom can extend for additional reach or retract when maneuvering in confined spaces. This extension function is a key part of the S-65 versatility.
Turntable Rotation
The rotating turntable lets the boom swing left or right so operators can access work locations without repositioning the entire machine.
Platform Positioning and Leveling
The platform is designed to remain level during normal boom movements. Operators should monitor platform position and keep it clear of structures and obstacles.
Drive and Steering Controls
The machine can be driven from the platform control station when conditions permit. Directional controls allow forward and reverse travel and steering adjustments. Follow the color-coded directional arrows on the platform controls and chassis when driving and steering.
Safe Control Operation Practices
Conduct Pre-Operation Inspections
Before using controls, complete the required pre-operation inspection, function tests, and workplace inspection. These checks help identify mechanical issues, damaged components, and unsafe conditions before work begins.
Maintain Situational Awareness
When operating boom controls, constantly monitor:
- Overhead obstructions
- Nearby personnel
- Structural hazards
- Ground conditions
- Electrical power lines
The machine position can change rapidly as the boom extends or rotates, making continuous awareness essential.
Use Smooth, Controlled Movements
Use gradual control inputs rather than abrupt movements. Smooth operation improves precision, helps platform stability, and reduces the chance of striking nearby structures.
Follow Load and Occupancy Limits
Never exceed the platform rated capacity or use the boom lift beyond its intended design. The S-65 is intended to lift personnel, tools, and materials to aerial work locations.
Emergency Control Considerations
Ground controls are important during an emergency. If an operator in the platform cannot operate the machine, trained personnel on the ground may use the ground control station to assist in safely lowering or repositioning the platform. Remove personnel from the platform before attempting recovery procedures when the manufacturer guidance requires it.
